University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg: Faculty of Health Sciences

Wits University is situated in Johannesburg, South Africa - a vibrant, leading commercial city on the African continent. The history of Wits is linked with mining, academic excellence, and with political and civic activism. Over the years, the University of the Witwatersrand became internationally recognised for academic excellence and extensive research activities. The country's first dental hospital and school was established by the University. It was also a local first in the field of physio- and occupational therapy and the first South African institution to open a clinic for the treatment of speech defects. The first blood transfusion service in the Union of South Africa was started by Wits medical students; the Medical School undertook the first clinical survey of childbirth in African tribal conditions. University of Limpopo: Faculty of Health Sciences

Through its offerings in the Schools of Medicine and Health Care Sciences, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) supports academic endeavours that seek to strengthen the advancement of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) as an important national imperative. Interestingly, this is directly related to one of the University's mission-specific support goals, which is to strengthen and maintain close collaboration with commerce, industry, government and local governments, and professions in producing suitably qualified and well-equipped career-oriented graduates. In this context, and in the midst of a widespread COVID-19 pandemic, the two schools have inherently adapted their training and expanded their solution-driven academic offerings in order to support World Health Organization calls for the betterment of lives, particularly in developing countries such as South Africa. As a result, the FHS continues to support SET recognition through a variety of engagements, including but not limited to participation in research niche areas and collaborative medical sciences research.

The Faculty of Health Sciences has a long and proud tradition of excellence in the education of health care professionals. Driven by cutting edge research in the creation of teaching and learning in line with the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) in order to graduate a new generation of health care professionals. Students who join the Faculty receive a rich and varied hands-on clinical experience in a range of hospital, clinic and community settings thus becoming a productive part of society and communities with long term positive impact. Students are trained by 600 academic staff members located in four schools, namely Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Health Systems and Public Health, and Medicine. Training is in partnership with the Gauteng Health Department in Steve Biko Academic, Kalafong, Mamelodi, Tembisa, Pretoria West, Tshwane District and Weskoppies Hospitals and Mpumalanga’s Witbank Hospital and its community.

It opened its doors in Bloemfontein in 1904 as the Grey University College, with six students in the Humanities. rhodes University: Faculty of Pharmacy

Formal courses leading to a degree in Pharmacy at Rhodes University were first offered in 1956 in what was to become the Department of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Science at Rhodes University. The Department grew to become the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Faculty of Science and in 1980 was established as a Faculty of Pharmacy in its own right when the number of students studying pharmacy exceeded those studying science. The Faculty of Pharmacy is currently the only Faculty of Pharmacy in South Africa. Interestingly the University has had a much longer association with Pharmacy in South Africa and it was at a meeting of the then South African Pharmacy Board in January 1929 in Cape Town that Rhodes University College was recognised as an institution where courses of training and study for the Preliminary Scientific Examination for Pharmacy could be attended.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is part of a multilateral agreement with the Department of Health to host our clinical training platform at the East London Resources Centre for our students to be part of this exciting program together with students from Lilitha College and Walter Sisulu University. We have teaching and research collaborations nationally, regionally and internationally. The faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is located at the Nelson Mandela Drive Campus, Mthatha. The new medical school faculty and administrative buildings are at Sissons Street, Fort Gale (next to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital). The faculty is comprised of the School of Medicine with 11 academic departments as well as the departments of Nursing, Public Health and Rehabilitation Medicine. The faculty offers six undergraduate programs in the following categories: Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics, Bachelor of Medical Sciences, Bachelor of Medicine in Clinical Practise, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion. Graduate opportunities in the health sector exist both in public and private sectors including medical orthotics and prosthetics practitioner, clinician scientists in physiological sciences and biochemistry, clinical associate, medical practitioner, professional nurse and health promotion practitioners.
